We wanted to say “thank you.”

Salem Health faced unprecedented challenges over the past week. The emergency room treated record numbers of patients. Our census hit new highs. Across the state, other hospitals and skilled nursing facilities faced similar volumes, leaving us with few outside resources to rely on as we worked to discharge and transfer patients. On top of that, another weather event put further stress on staffing.

These circumstances are far from easy and demand more than we are typically asked to give. Yet countless times over the last week, you and your colleagues have shown courage, grace and flexibility in the face of difficulty.

You prioritized patients and expedited discharges, adapting quickly to what necessity required. You showed up where needed and on schedule to care for patients, despite weather that could have kept you from work. You showed a willingness to work outside of your normal roles, lending a hand where you could, even if the task was small. Most importantly, you have continued to deliver high quality care to our patients, despite the fatigue and stress of an increased workload.

Your sacrifices and effort are seen and appreciated. Our community is fortunate to have skilled and compassionate providers like you. Thank you.

New and unforeseen challenges are a part of working in health care. This won’t be the last time we face snow and ice storms or high census, but we know that the team at Salem Health is more than up to whatever difficulties we encounter.

Please let us know how we can further support you and your team.
